FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between FOKAL and Friends of FOKAL?
FOKAL is the mother organization based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Friends of FOKAL is based in New York, at the Open Society Institute, and serves as the US-based fundraising arm. It provides the structure necessary to allow you, to make contributions that are fully tax deductible.

Would we accept contributions in kind?
Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to accept contributions in-kind. However, if you have an in kind contribution of some magnitude that you would like to discuss, please feel free to email our office at info@fokal-usa.org. We thank you in advance for your consideration.

What percentage of your contribution goes toward administrative costs?
Approximately 20% are earmarked for administrative costs since Haiti lacks some of the basic structures to run operations in country.

How long has FOKAL been in operation?
FOKAL has more than 10 years of operation and leadership in Haiti. It created Friends of FOKAL, which is in essence FOKAL in the US as a way to help meet some of our funding shortfall and establish a link with Haitians overseas.

Why do we need funding when we are being funded by the Soros Foundation?
The actual program costs incurred for all the programs in place, for more than a decade, have exceeded the support received from the Soros Foundation. In order to meet this shortfall and make projects sustainable into the future, more support is needed.

What is The Tides Center?
The Tides Center served as our fiscal agent from 2006 to 2008

Where can I learn more about Haiti?
There is certainly more to Haiti than the simple epithet of “the poorest country in the western hemisphere.” Please feel free to access the page on the FOKAL website or the World Bank to learn more about Haiti.
