Haiti
Haiti has seen political instability, a severely
debilating economy, and an impoverished population. In a country of more
than 8 million inhabitants only a little over half the population, an
estimate of 52.9% can read and write and per capita income rarely reaches
$400 a year (according to the World Bank Report 2004).
The public education system is unable to meet demands: 48% of the population
is under the age of 18. Out of 100 primary school age children, only 10
attend public schools, 32 go to private schools and 58 don't go to school
at all.
